Alan Rappeport's article "Donald Trump Steps Back From Calling for Muslim Registry" was published by the New York Times on November 20, 2015. Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump was recently asked by a reporter whether there should be a Muslim registry, a question prompted by the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. At the time, he responded enthusiastically, supporting the idea and saying he would accomplish this task through proper management. Since his statement, however, he was backed away from the idea and focused more on the surveillance part of the idea. He has not issued a full retraction but it is clear that he knows that he made a mistake in his statement.
I think that it is incredibly important that people who even momentarily support the idea of a registry of people from a certain religion do not become president. It is very clear that ISIS is not really a Muslim organization and that extremely few Muslims are terrorists. If people who believe what ISIS wants us to believe become president, we as a nation will start down a dreadful path. This situation reminds me slightly of the Trial of Tears and the Indian Removal Act, which was issued by Andrew Jackson. Jackson treated the Native Americans poorly because of their race. Although Trump is not calling for the removal of Muslims, a registry at this day in age might be even worse.
