Controversy over Caitlyn Jenner winning Glamour award by Eleanor E-W

Recently, Caitlyn Jenner was awarded the Glamour Woman of the year award, prompting the husband of a woman who helped in 9/11 (and died) and was awarded woman of the year in 2001 to return his wife's woman of the year award because he was so offended. He believes that Caitlyn Jenner does not speak for the trans community accurately, and doesn't deserve the award.
I don't really agree with Caitlyn Jenner winning this award, but I also don't agree with the man completely. I do think Caitlyn Jenner has unfortunately presented some pretty sexist and outdated ideas about what it means to be a woman (i.e. how you look, how you dress etc.) and her transgender identity is capitalized on to make money and promote the reality TV show she stars in with her family (pretty much some of the most capitalistic, self absorbed, terrible people there are). However, she has recently become the face of the transgender community and brought a lot of transgender issues to light, which is a good thing. I wish their could have been somebody better to represent the trans community, but because she is so famous she has been able to successfully help a lot of trans people, and get people to care about this issue. I'm not sure whether I think she should have won this award, but I think the man sending back his wife's award is a way over reaction. This is about social change, and resistance to social change, which is something we learned about in class with all the social reform movements.

  1. Wow this is sad. I thought that Caitlyn Jenner was bold and was a great way for the celebrity to connect with regular people who are going or have gone through this transition. Although, I do think the awards that have been given to her have gone a little bit too far, only because there are people struggling with this everywhere and Caitlyn has just been glorified and is exempt from not all but a lot of the hatred and natural struggles.

  2. I find this extremely insulting, the award wasn't even his, it was his wife's for her heroic actions during 9-11 so it wasn't his to give away. I agree that many women deserve an award for the amazing things that they do but don't get recognition for it but discounting the hardships of Caitlyn Jenner just demonstrates why she deserves and earned the award.

  3. I think that Caitlyn Jenner has helped a lot of people not only in the trans community but in all realms of life accept their true identities. While I'm not completely sure that she completely deserved the award, I think the man overreacted by sending his wife's award back. Caitlyn has shown an extreme amount of courage by changing to her true self, especially after being in the public eye and she is helping gain awareness of the problems the trans community is facing.

  4. Caitlyn doesn't deserve the award, at least not completely. She's done some things for the trans community but that seems to be the only selfless thing to come out of the transition. The transition has been used mostly to gain popularity and get people to watch their reality show. This may be a biased statement, but I strongly agree with the widowed man. The return of the award was a little overboard but he had the right idea.

  5. Caitlyn Jenner was a huge icon for transgender people. She showed them how great it is to be who you are, and it helped a lot of people embrace themselves. I think she deserved to be on the cover, even if it was for selfish reasons, because of the impact it has on others.
