Popular coffee chain Starbucks is offering a free bachelor's degree from online Arizona State University for their employees who work over twenty hours a week. This applies to many of them, but so far there are only two thousand enrolled. Before, the program affected and helped only a smaller range of their employees. Now, they're investing in them even more. This could be seen as a marketing ploy, because it makes Starbucks look really good. However, it's also actually doing a lot of good for the people who are helped by this. People with a college degree are more likely to be paid more and more likely to hold better jobs.
This could be a step to close the wage gap. This is much better than the working conditions that prevailed for immigrants in the 1930's. There are no longer sweatshops, or child labor, etc. Now, it is actually improving people's lives to be able to work. In some ways, this is even better than a union. Even if Starbucks messes up with their workers in the future, they will always have this to fall back on. I think that this would be a good path for other companies to follow if they want to retain employee loyalty and grow in size.
