Craig Hicks Faces Death Penalty by Elizabeth Walker, P.3

Craig Hicks, who is charged in the killing of three Muslim students at Chapel Hill earlier this year, may face the death penalty. The superior court judge Orlando Hudson Jr. ruled that he is certainly eligible for it. Hicks, who was their neighbor, turned himself in the same night of the shootings. Though he had not committed prior crimes, his Facebook  page had many rants about religion. This was clearly a hate crime. This was not random murder, he specifically targeted this family because they were Muslim.

Too often this happens in America. From lynchings in the 1900's to the KKK and the prevalence of naturalism, the US has not always been the "land of the free." Unfortunately, there are still Holocaust deniers and those in the South who still hang confederate flags. I'm not sure how race relations can ever improve in the US, not with the amount of racism, even in politics, including Woodrow Wilson, Richard Nixon, and may others. It needs to be a conversation with understanding and the ability to change, and I'm not sure that the United States will ever be in a position to handle or accept that.
