Jodi Arias was sentenced to life in prison Monday for the gruesome 2008 murder of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander.
Maricopa County Judge Sherry Stephens could have sentenced Arias to life with the possibility of early release after 25 years, but decided the convicted killer should spend the rest of her life behind bars.
“The crime involved substantial plan and preparation. The defendant did not render aid to the victim. The defendant destroyed evidence at the crime scene,” Judge Stephens said. “The defendant went to great lengths to conceal her involvement in the crime. The court has also considered the harm to the victim’s family members.”
“The court finds the mitigation presented is not sufficiently substantial to call for leniency and that a natural life sentence is appropriate. It is ordered the defendant shall be incarcerated in the Department of Corrections for the rest of her natural life with no possibility of parole,” Stephens added.
This article interests me. I think they took a very long time in this trial with its decisions, considering this happened in 2008. I don't really think I have an opinion on this matter in general so I'm okay with whatever the court chooses. This reminds me of the trials done on Nazi officials following the end of World War II, but unlike this one, those decisions were made fairly quickly and they may not have been fair legally.
