Free Speech through the Internet/ Madeline Boreham/ 4th period
In the past few years other domain names besides .com and .org have been on the rise. For example one is Adobe.sucks. Most big business have chosen not to buy into this, given that the price for the domain is 100 times more expensive (2,500 dollars a year) than the normal price. Many believe it to be an extortion scheme and will not give them money. That doesn't mean that all major corporations haven't paid; Walmart, Hotmail, and AIG have all bought up all the rights to their names, restricting anyone from using it. These companies are furious that they feel the need to protect their brand like this. This isn't just now for big businesses, a person can now pay $200 to block their name so people can not use it.
I think that this is a very profitable industry, because people like have power and they feel that on the internet. Does that make it right? While the people are getting opportunities to own domains, the way they go about it is wrong. They will post whatever they want because it doesn't have to be them posting it. I think it is wrong to sam businesses, especially for the smaller ones because they don't have the money to buy up and stay constant on all the payments to keep their name under control on the internet. I think it is very interesting that people can buy their name online. It would help with the people who feel like they can post anything and get away with it, because the names choices would be smaller. I do think that this industry will become bigger until big business come in with legal action.
