Starbucks and Free College: Margaret Canady 2nd Period

Starbucks announced Monday that it was doubling its free college tuition plan for employees to cover a full four years of college instead of two. The program, in partnership with Arizona State University, offers all full-time and part-time Starbucks employees full college tuition coverage for a four-year bachelor's degree though ASU's online degree program. Starbucks says it will invest at least $250 million to help some 25,000 employees graduate by 2025.
Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz in a statement said that "by giving our partners access to four years of full tuition coverage, we provide them with a critical tool for a lifelong opportunity....We're stronger as a nation when everyone is afforded a pathway to success."
More than 144,000 employees would currently qualify for the free tuition. Nearly 2,000 Starbucks employees have already enrolled in the program through ASU online. Employees have no commitment to remain at the the company past graduation.

This is a really amazing program that Starbucks is offering! It shows that the company really cares about its employees, and wants them to get a higher level education to succeed in life. It reminds me of the government assistance programs that were instilled to help reform American society, such as JFK's "New Frontier" or LBJ's "Great Society". It's interesting to see how big corporations in the 21st century provide health care, benefits, and education for their employees, rather than the government providing these measures for the American society.

  1. That's a tremendous thing to do on Starbucks' part. It's awesome that the CEO had this point of view and that so many employees will be able to benefit from this amazing decision.
