For a very long time, people were unsure how to go about treating those who suffered from Schizophrenia. People that have the disease often find themselves isolated, feeling threatened, and having a hard time expressing their thoughts. Recently, a new method was discovered that has proven to help Schizophrenics: art therapy. Art theraphy takes place in a group setting where patients paint, draw and sculpt pieces of art that later gives a therapist an easier outlet into understanding how the patient is feeling. According to studies, the new method increases self-esteem, emotional withdrawal, and lack of motivation.
I think it's great that we are finding more ways to help people with Schizophrenia. Art in general is a very beautiful thing and this article just goes to show how impactful it can be in peoples' lives. I think Dorothea Dix, who lead the reform for the mentally ill during the Antebellum period, would've been very pleased to see the improvement in the ability for Schizophrenics to express themselves.

It really is amazing that the therapy is actually doing something for the patients. From my experience at least, repetitious craft can be very relaxing and I definitely see how this can help.

I agree with you completely Rachel. Instead of some sort of medication, finding an outlet like this where these people can express their thoughts and emotions is great. I love that it's through art as well. Dorothea Dix would would be pleased.
ReplyDeleteIts always been known that people like schizophrenics are the most creative people artistically since any other outlet is difficult to communicate through for them. I think this is an excellent idea and gives a great opportunity for those who have difficulties getting their words and feelings organized enough to communicate them verbally.
ReplyDeleteI find it very beneficial to our society that we nurture those who are more capable of creativity than others by providing them opportunities in spite of their limitations. Elizabeth Muscari p6
