The New York mayor has just released a statement saying that starting November 19th, citizens caught with pot may have the chance to only be written a ticket for a 100 dollars rather than being arrested. In this case, it would save the police station a lot of time because nearly 24000 cases of pot possesion are handles in new york a year. With changing this policy, It could really help young people in the future get jobs because employers do not normally ask for times when you have just been written a ticket. The police officers are going to have to choice though to write you up or to hand cuff you and take you to jail.
What I do not find normal about this case is the part where the officers have the judgement to decide whether you're going to get a ticket or a worse offense. Yes, some cases will be more extreme than others, but maybe the cops should have a written policy so the possibility of unfair treatment is avoided. I think that this idea could be really great for New York, its just a little sketchy that a man more innocent could be sent to jail, than a man much worse. There are a lot of opinions on this drug and you would hope that the police do not have biased opinions, but who is really stopping them from that? http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/10/us/new-york-city-marijuana/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
I think that there are a lot worse things that you could do to get sent to jail, so in my opinion, tickets should suffice for smoking pot.
