Hippo Gives Birth - Elvira Gamboa

Mara, a female hippo, gave birth to a calf recently at the Los Angeles zoo. She had been on birth control so the birth was quite a surprise for everyone. This is the first hippo birth since two decades at the Los Angeles Zoo. The hippo's gender hasn't been determined yet.

This is really great since hippos are an endangered species. They were hunted down for their teeth and meat, but they are now a protected species.
