larsen nichols- Hawaii residents scramble for masks

https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/13/us/hawaii-volcano-masks/index.html

On Sunday, 17 volcanic fissures had officially opened up from volcanoes on Hawaii's Big Island. The biggest threat is volcanic smog, which can cause respiratory issues at high concentrations, and many people are scrambling for protection from it in the form of masks. There is now a shortage due to high demand, but the Hawaii Department of Health is not recommending the use of masks anyway. The Department's best advice currently is to vacate any area that is affected by the smoke or other dangers from the erupting volcanoes.

This article was written by associate writer Dakin Adone at CNN on Sunday, May 13th. It aims to inform people of the volcano crisis going on in Hawaii and how people are struggling to find protection. Because the article is so recent, we don't know exactly how people are going to be affected or how long the volcanoes will erupt. Before reading this article, I had no idea any of this was going on in Hawaii. I hope people in danger zones are able to take precautions against the eruptions or evacuate their homes, and I hope the government is going to provide for relief. It didn't seem like much was being done to help the situation, but then again I'm not sure how much can be done to stop volcanoes from erupting or the damage they cause.

Synthesis: This article can be synthesized to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico last year. In both situations, non-mainland parts of the U.S experienced natural disasters with insufficient government aid.
