Immigration: Is Trump Ignoring the Obvious Solution?- Mason Crumpacker

Summary:  Despite his vigorous support during his campaign of employers using E-Verify to screen the immigration status potential new hires, President Trump has remained silent the screening program since taking office.
Eight states currently require employers to use E-Verify, but Trump has not encouraged expansion into other states as part of his immigration reform.

Analysis:  E- Verify is overwhelmingly popular among voters.  The Washington Post quotes its own poll that showed 80% support for the screening program.  Then how to explain Trump's apparent lack of support?  Perhaps it would drive up wages, unemployment is at record lows and demand for workers is high for jobs historically filled by immigrant labor.  If E-Verify became mandatory and undocumented workers were no longer able to fulfill these jobs then wages would rise above what employers are willing to pay. Restaurant owner, Steve Carb complains, "There are people who are willing to work and pay taxes, but they can's get jobs because we can't legally hire them.

Furthermore, if jobs were no longer easily available then the temptation to risk illegal immigration would be curbed.  Small business owner, Bruce L. Dusenberry, explains “If employers were required to follow the law just like they scream about immigrants following the law, it would reduce the demand. We wouldn’t need the military going down to the border.”

How can we test the president's true support for immigration reform in the workplace?  One simple question: does the Trump Cooperation use E-Verify for all its properties, or only those were the program is mandated?
