Doctors perform first U.S. penis transplant Mariela Lomeli

summary        Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital performed the first U.S. penis transplant, they said Monday. Thomas Manning, 64 had his penis amputated after he was diagnosed with penile cancer in 2012. Dr. Dicken Ko, director of the hospital's Regional Urology Program, said the objectives of the surgery were primarily to reconstruct the genitalia so that it appeared natural, followed by urinary function and hopefully sexual function.
opinion            I hope that he is cautiously optimistic that he will regain function. I hope he can have his life back and alleviate the suffering and despair that came from not having genitalia.
synthesis           Anesthesia was introduced in October 1846 which allowed surgeons to operate more deliberately. But because infection almost always followed, very little surgery was done. Then came the Civil War and the need for an astounding number of operations to be performed by doctors without any prior surgical experience.  Many Civil War surgeons lamented their own lack of preparation for the difficulties of treating large numbers of severely wounded men and never witnessed a major amputation.

  1. I hope that the gut is happy after the surgery. Anesthesia is a great thing so that the patients don't feel the pain during the surgery.
