The massive fire at the 850 year old Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris has since been contained but has destroyed the iconic spire that housed some of Christendom's most sacred relics. The firefighters have managed to save the cathedral's landmark rectangular towers from the blaze but the cause of the fire is still unknown.
This article was created April 15, 2019 at 8:50 pm CDT. The Paris cathedral is one of seven cathedrals of Notre Dame in France and by far the most famous. Built on the Île de la Cité in the Seine beginning in the 1160s, it is an essential component of French identity and the home to irreplaceable works of art and religious significance, attracting more than 14 million visitors a year. the church survived the Reformation, the French Revolution and the Nazis. Now, its roof has collapsed and much of the interior is destroyed, including, it seems, the building’s glorious 13th-century stained-glass rose windows. This event is truly devastating because not only was it a center for religion, but a center for art as well.
