This past week’s current event that I will be discussing is regarding an incident that after reading the article I could understand where the confusion these parents were feeling. A young 5th grade girl, Raniya Wright, died Wednesday morning after being involved in a “physical altercation” (as the authorities called it) with another young girl that occurred on Monday. While you would think there would be an exact play-by-play by now of exactly what events took place to put this young girl in such bad shape, there has not yet been anything expressed about what the ‘fight’ actually entailed, leaving Raniya’s parents speechless/ clueless as to why their daughter has died from a school fight. The school faculty and board had a meeting the Thursday after to disclose and express any further information they felt needed to be, as the parents waited not-so-patiently outside the room to try and get some more answers from faculty and/or authority.
This event can be supported by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act passed in 1974 stating that FERPA protects the confidentiality of student educational records. The Act applies to any public or private elementary, secondary, or post-secondary school as well as any state or local education program that receives federal funding.
