Isadora Lilly- Trump MOCKS Trail of Tears
This past Saturday, Senator Elizabeth Warren officially announced that she will be running for president in the election of 2020. As usual, Trump shared his opinion on Twitter a few hours later, clearly rudiculing Warren and her claims of her Native American heritage, along with the millions of Natives who perished along the Trail of Tears. Trump wrote: “Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President. Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!”
Trump’s reference to the “campaign TRAIL” clearly references the Indian Removal Act signed by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830. This act authorized the forced relocation of Native Americans to the lands West of the Mississippi River. This led to a series of migrations known as the Trail of Tears and the death of thousands of Native Americans. This is what makes it so disturbingly inappropriate for the president of the United States, a figure which is supposed to represent a nation of people and values of freedom and equality, to use such a horrific event in which thousands of people where torn from their lands and shoved towards death in order to mock another human being who is proud of her heritage. It is truly disgusting that a man we call “president” so evidently supports prejudice and discrimination to those who really founded this country.

This is absolutely disgusting. This is just further proof that Trump has no respect for our country's original population and for other people whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteTrump needs to make his points in a way that is not offensive to others.
ReplyDeleteThis is very disrespectful. It is sad that all these years, Native Americans still can't be treated fairly.
ReplyDeleteTrump always makes a fool of himself on Twitter.
ReplyDeleteyuck.
