Denver Public School teachers are preparing for a strike tomorrow over salaries and bonuses. Though classrooms will be staffed with substitutes and administrators, the strike would significantly disrupt many normal operations at the 207 school district. Classrooms with young children will be closed causing about 5,000 preschoolers to stay home. The two sides met on Saturday but were unable to find a solution or middle ground for their differences. The union left negotiations, declaring the strike would happen Monday. Right now we don’t know exactly how the strike will affect schools and for how long. DPS is one of Denver's largest employers, and some parents plan to keep their kids home in an effort to force the district to compromise faster.

This event reminds me of the strike that schools, including Booker T. took last year. Last year’s strike was to enforce gun safety laws and was strongly student led. This strike was taken after the mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida. This one that is taking place tomorrow is all led by teachers, yet students seem to still be playing a big role in it. I hope they get the outcome they want, because while this is about their cause, it is also about the community as a whole and fighting for something in unity.
