Adidas pulls all-white Black History Month sneaker after social media backlash
Adidas put out a shoe during Black History Month. The design was an all white shoe and many fans were disappointed and confused with it. The shoe was an a design from their existing Ultraboost uncaged. The materials were not specified but a employee said on twitter that it was made out of cotton.
Analysis: This article is very interesting to me. I see how the people were confused about the design but I don't think Adidas had a hidden meaning under the shoe. I think the situation went to the next level when a employee stated "it was made out of cotton". I do think they should have stayed mindful and maybe come up with a different color for the shoe because it is a controversial thing to have a white shoe in a month to honor black people. I think this article was written to inform people about a controversial thing that occurred from a popular brand and how people were upset about it. This story relates to history because other fashion brands have gone through the same thing. H&M had a backlash last year with a little black boy in a hoodie saying "coolest monkey in the jungle." They also apologized for their mistake and it had became a controversial issue. They had lost some sales because people didn't agree what they had did.
I am a proud supporter of adidas and honestly I would be confused too and relate the incident to gucci presenting a racist shirt or the H and M scandal. Designers have to get better about what there presenting to their audience.
ReplyDeleteI don’t understand how such big corporations even continue to make these mistakes. I mean it’s Black History Month and you’re gonna whip up a pair of white adidas? Made of cotton? Not too hard to see that that would become largely controversial.
