china and india are making the planet greener, nasa says - will goodell
while the earth is facing a major climate crisis, and with china and india at the forefront of global emissions, it is also getting leafier and greener. a study by nasa revealed through satellite images, that india and china, the countries with the biggest populations, are also responsible for a large increase in green foliage. since the start of the century, the average amount of green foliage has increased by 5 % or over two million square acres. researchers also say that the increase of new greenery does not neutralize deforestation and other major negative impacts on ecosystems everywhere. a third of the leaf increase is attributable to china and india due to implementaion of major tree planting projects alongside a vast increase in agriculture. china and india account for only 9 % of the planets land are covered in vegetation, yet produce a signifigent amount of foliage. green surfaces increase the fraction of energy that goes into evaporating water rather than heating the surface, which can potentially offset effects of climate change.
