French tennis star Alize Cornet was met with wide criticism in the tennis world when last week during her match, she briefly removed her shirt to readjust it in the sweltering heat. To her surprise, when she returned from changing at the back of the court, she had received a code violation from the chair umpire. This incident led to major backlash on social media about how the situation was handled and whether double standards were at work for men and women. The United States Tennis Association later apologized about the situation and the way it was handled, followed by other tennis groups speaking out about it.
Prior to reading this article I had briefly seen this story in the news and other ones similar to this regarding what female tennis stars could and could not wear. I think double standards have existed in the sports world for quite some time, and are just recently being brought to the surface by the people who are experiencing them. I believe this article was written for anyone who is cares about situations like this, regardless of weather or not you like sports. The situation In whole does not paint a good picture for the tennis world, but rather speaks to the double standards and inequality that exists in such platforms and in the world as a whole.
