All eyes are on Texas' midterm election on November 6th, with current Senator Ted Cruz and challenger Beto O'Rourke battling for votes. They had a live debate on Friday Sep. 21st at the SMU campus in Dallas, and it made national headlines. It's been 22 years since a Democrat won the seat as Senator, and if O'Rourke, a Democrat, is able to unseat an incumbent, that is quite a strong message on what Texas really wants. According to Todd Gillman's article in the Dallas Morning News, one of the major deciding factors in the race will be the relationship to Trump. Trump was extremely negative towards Ted Cruz during the presidential run in 2016, and the moderator questioned him on his relationship with Cruz, since after Trump was elected, Cruz began to work with Trump as a peer.
When talking about Texas politics, I really haven't paid much attention since I am currently not of age to vote. Learning about the politics and the lack of democratic representation in Texas is very interesting, but not surprising considering Texas is the very southern. I can compare Beto to Bob Krueger, who was the most recent former Texan US Democratic senator, elected in 1996, 22 years ago. Because the current Senator, at the time, resigned, governor Bob Krueger was appointed to the seat. Supposing that the only reason there was a Democratic senator during the past two decades was because of a governor elect, the chances of Beto becoming Texas senator are very low. However, because of the bad connotation of Trump and Cruz being related, it does give Cruz a slightly lower hand. I'm not sure if Texas is ready to put a Democrat in office, but it sure will be an interesting run between the two.
Since we aren't able to vote yet , its always good to know what's going on with the elections and basically politics so we know why we voted for a certain person. I'm glad you decided to write about this , so we can all be aware what's going on in Texas. -Alma Alvarado-Cabrera-
ReplyDeleteI agree it is very important to be well informed of local politics even before being able to vote
ReplyDeleteI think this is an absolutely fascinating ongoing revelation in Texas right now, because even if Beto loses the election, it will show that the stereotype of the Republican Texan cowboy, may not be around forever.
