Leslie Vasquez- Protest Held in Response to Priest Burning LGBTQ+ Flag

On September 19, Priest Paul Kalchik burned a pride flag in response to claims of minimizing sex abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. He mentioned that he did not "sit well" with that comment and further stated "What have we done wrong other than destroy a piece of propaganda that was used to put out a message other than what the church is about?" Deb Mell called for a peaceful protest to show that there was note hate in their area in Chicago. Many supporters gathered at the church, saying that what Kalchik has done is shameful to the church and to church members who are part of the community.

On June 26, 2015, same-sex marriage was legalized in the U.S. However, that did not stop further retaliation against the LGBTQ+ community. Almost a year later, a gunman opened fire on Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, murdering 49 people, specifically Latinos, who were part of the LGBTQ+ community. This shows that even though the LGBTQ+ community have some sort of legal right, they are yet to have a fundamental human right. Being part of this wonderful community, it saddens me to see that there is still violence and anger towards those that are not heterosexual or cisgender. Yes, we have Pride. Yes, we have a marriage right. However, we are still seen as inferior, just like those from the Stonewall Rebellion and the AIDS epidemic and so on. Basic rights and compassion can be so important to a huge chunk of the population. Support your friends and family. Be an ally to/for them. Take a stand. Be there for your Queer and POC companions. We have a long way to go.

  1. This is inhuman , I believe that we fall in love with a person not a gender, we deserve to love whoever we want and if this is called a "sin" , then I personally think that its not (relating to the catholic church). -Alma Alvarado-Cabrera-

I believe that, under the 1st amendment, freedom of religion is allowed and "technically" the priest had the right to do it, but it still spreads a message of hate and is a shameful act on the part of the priest. I believe people should be able to love whoever they want, and the church shouldn't spread their ideas (that i done agree with) in ways that seem violent our outright hateful, even if they have the right to do so.

  3. Rose Tharp -- This is also kind of like the burning of the american flag. You may not agree with what's happening, but that does not mean you should destroy something so prominent in any given community. that said, it was his property i assume, so he was just wasting his own money.
