According to data released from the united nations, since the European migration crisis in 2015, traveling between North Africa and Italy has never been deadlier. For every 18 migrants who traveled along the Mediterranean within the first 7 months of 2018, at least 1 person would drown. (in total, about 1,600 people have died within the first 7 months of this year.) This death rate is triple the amount it was in 2015 and is almost double of 2016. This rising death s caused by a spike in shipwrecks that happened after Matteo Salvini, Italy's interior minister closed rescue vessels from bringing migrants into Italy in June. Although Italy's arrival rate had fallen before the appointment of Mr. Salvini, the rates continue to plummet.
As I read through this article, I noticed that this article gives no solution to the problem mentioned. This tells me that it was meant to be a global informant so that others who wish to migrate to Italy are aware of the risks. The article even calls this a "cautionary tale" to European officials.
