Hurricane Harvey Still Affecting the People- Gracie Zytynski

A year after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, families are still affected by this tragic event, hitting the poorer cities around Houston harder than others. Monica Houston, 43, shares her story of the affect of Hurricane Harvey on her family. Ms.Houston has been living in an alternative trailer on the front lawn of her other family's damaged lawn. Her family has received non profit volunteers and groups from the government, but it was not enough. Ms.Houston pointed to a jug in the corner and said, "That's our savings." Inside the jug was a two dollar bill, rolls of pennies, and loose change. After a year of saving she is left poor, due to trying to receive her old life before the hurricane. Not just Ms. Houston shared her story, but also Kurt H. Pickering, Sylvester Turner, Patricia Crawford, and Amanda K. Edwards. According to the article, the families that were hit are still living with relatives and friends, making it feel that the storm was only months ago, not a year. However, they need more help.

This article published by Manny Fernandez in the New York Times on September 3, 2018 showed the struggle of recovery from Hurricane Harvey. Prior to reading this article, I did not know that the lives of the hurricane victims were still being affected. After reading the article, I grew a better understanding of how long it takes to recover from a tragic event like Hurricane Harvey. Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Texas on August 25, 2017 making it the second most costly hurricane to hit the United States. Because of this, it has taken much unity among our country to rebuild Houston, just as the unity of building our nation in the beginning. This was written mainly to show how the people of our country have still struggled from this tragic event, resulting in it having a negative influence. Manny Fernandez most likely saw the struggle of the people, so he wanted to publish an article to show the people of our country how long it takes to recover. This article was also written to show how us, as a community can help the lives of the families hit from the hurricane, making it very important.
