Recently a study has ben conducted on the health of foster kids. An associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine, who is the leader of the survey, found that foster kids in the United States have a higher risk for healt problems. Particularly, ones like asthma, ADHD, and depression. Her team found that foster kids have a two to three times higher risk of health issues than other children. They also found that they are five to seven times more likely to have behavioral issues and symptoms of depression of anxiety. However, they cannot conclude if foster care caused them or made them worse. These studies aren't surprising. Many foster children go through things that would cause these health issues. Participants in this study hope to find help for children affected, essentially in rural areas, where there aren't as many specialists for their health issues.
Analysis: I think that it is a good thing studies are being conducted on the adverse effects of foster care and whether or not foster care makes health issues worse. Lots of children are in foster care and it is important that we try to help them to be the healthiest they can be. It is important that these children are recognized and not ignored.
Synthesis: This can relate to the 19th century, when the American foster care system was created.http://health.usnews.com/health-care/articles/2016-10-17/foster-kids-face-higher-risk-of-health-problems-study
This is very sad! I feel all children should have similar rights to a good health.
