This article goes into in depth detail into the process of fracking and the possibility of it causing the earthquakes that just recently happened in Oklahoma this Saturday. A disposal well is what's used used for disposing of water for fracking. After fracking started in Oklahoma, earthquakes in the state have increased by 5,000% in 2014, causing government scientists to say that disposal wells cause an increased risk for "induced" earthquakes. In January, twenty-seven disposal wells were forced to reduce their activity by the state. Because of the current state of emergency due to Saturday's quake, over the course of 10 days 37 disposal wells have been shut down. However, the slowing or stopping of disposal wells may not fix it - the already pumped disposal water may have already done its damage.
This article is attempting to convey the harmful and dangerous effects of fracking, and the danger it poses to states and their populations. Even after the many earthquakes in the DFW area that may have been caused by fracking, people have continued to disregard the possible effects of fracking may have on the environment. This article and topic is important so more of these earthquakes don't happen again, and we, as a human race, learn from our mistakes and from messing with our environment without knowing the possible harmful effects. This article is directed towards people who have been skeptical of the causation and correlation of disposal wells to earthquakes, and to convince them that fracking in the US must slow down significantly or come to a complete halt without having to face any more dangerous consequences for future generations. The turning of a blind eye towards the endangerment of our people in order for personal monetary gain is similar to the genocide of the Native Americans in order for English settlers to take over their land.

I agree. I think it would be best if we just left the Earth alone for a bit, because these earthquakes are getting a little out of hand.
ReplyDeleteI read a similar article. I think we really need to be more cautious about what we do to the earth. Maybe people need to consider transferring to an energy source that doesn't cause as much damage to the earth.
