summary:
24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell was shot 12 times after asking police for car help. After dropping his friend off in a nice neighborhood in North Carolina, Ferrell got in a car accident. He managed to get out of the car and walk up the street to search for help. Meanwhile, the police station received a "breaking and entering" 911 call that said a man was nocking repeatedly on the door. Once the police arrived at the scene they matched Ferrell as the man who was apparently breaking and entering. After a failed taser attempt Jonathan was shot 12 times by officer Randall Kerrick who is now charged with manslaughter.
analysis:
The authors of this articles write in a very unbiased tone, they simply state the facts. This is good because sometimes they make the victim seem as though they are the cause of the problem or they have done something in the past that caused the incident. This article was written in in 2013 but it is still relevant today because many of the same things are happening. There has been a trend throughout history where black people have been abused and shot for something that is out of their control, their skin color. At this point I am fed up with the treatment of black men and women in America from Sandra Bland to Trayvon Martin it has got to stop. This article should have a positive influence on the audience even though it gives you a negative feeling at first. The audience should feel something in their hearts to contribute to changing the federal justice system. The main idea of the article is that a man was shot for asking for help, but since he was black the police officer viewed him as a threat rather than someone who was simply asking for help. It's sad to connect this story to the segregation days but there are a few similarities, including the fact that whites and blacks were not united the way they should be.

I agree. It is so unfortunate that so many people have a (conscious or subconscious) bias against blacks. However, I feel that with each generation, we are slowly improving race relations in the US and around the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree but I think it's still a large issue to this day. Which is unacceptable, especially as this time when we should be long past our racial differences.
ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly. Enough is enough. Skin color should not be something that people are targeted for. We as a society must learn how to look past skin color and instead at the content of character.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the connection is still somewhat there. And it's hard for some people to admit but there is still a lot of work and change to be made.
