Sarah Childs- Two Men Shot and Killed

Summary: Two African American men were shot and killed by police officers in two cities across the country this week. Terence Crutcher and Keith Scott were killed in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Charlotte, North Carolina on September 21st. Terence Crutcher was unarmed, like so many other innocent men, when a Tulsa police officer shot and killed him. This was captured on video and released to the public. Surprisingly, they responded amazingly when hundreds attended a vigil in his honor, holding hands and bowing their heads. Similarly, another catastrophe occurred in Charlotte when Keith Scott was shot and killed by an officer trying to carry out a warrant for a different person. The major difference is how these people responded. People responded with riots and it was so out of control that police shot tear gas into the crowd, which prompted the rioters to throw glass bottles and smashing windows of nearby buildings. One protestor, Toussaint Romain, sums up these tragedies very well, "We don't need any more people to go to die, no more people to be arrested. We need to take a stand and do it the right way."

Analysis: This article was produced Thursday, a day after the incident. This may effect the meaning of the article because this was produced less than 24 hours after the accident so the authors might not have been able to get all of the information needed to produce this article, However, CNN is a very reliable source so I would not worry about any basis here. Additionally, I did have very limited prior knowledge about these shootings, but I was not confident in my knowledge. I was very open to any combination of possibilities while reading this article, and I have realized that these shootings are results of terrible racial boundaries between cultures. I also realized that these serious issues can synthesize directly to the Boston Massacre. Both of these incidents involved enforcement officials shooting and killing innocent, unarmed men. One particular men was very special to the Boston Massacre. Crispus Attucks was an African American man who was protesting for his rights. He was considered to be the first death of the American Revolution. Even though we do not have enough evidence to say that Crispus Attucks was targeted by the white soldiers, we can definitely see a connection between him and Terence Crutcher or Keith Scott.

  1. It is true that some of the information might not be sufficient due to the short amount of time between the event and the article but like you, i think that a lot of information can be determined in that amount of time and CNN is a very trustworthy source!!

  2. This is sad to hear. I hope their families heal quickly. How come I keep hearing about innocent men being killed? I hope the amount of shootings like these will stop.

  4. Like Devyn, I just don't understand why stories like this keep reappearing. Then after a riot went out afterwards it probably made it so much harder on the families. Hopefully the family is recovering and that this violence is coming to an end.

  5. It really saddens me that, when coming to this blog and just looking at the news in general, most headlines are about shootings and racism and police violence. Our society is incredibly corrupt and I have tremendous trouble trying to understand why things like this happen. I have a good friend in Charlotte and she was scared to go to school and/or leave her house during the riots.

  6. There are so many shootings that have been happening in the past year and it is just awful to hear about. Sometime soon, I hope America can try to lessen and change their ways. Hopefully, like others said, the families can heal quickly.
