Summary: Four are wounded and one is dead after two shootings on Sunday at the University of Illinois. Police are wondering if the pair of shootings may be related. The first shooting happened in an apartment on Green Street, shortly after midnight, where a party had been going on. "Our preliminary investigation completely points to an argument taking place at the party and the argument spilled out into the street and that's when a fight occurred," said police spokeswoman LaEisha Meaderds. As the fight escalated, there were shots fired and four people were hit. George Korchev was the unfortunate one to be killed, he was not involved in the fight, but was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was not a student at the university. The other three were taken to the hospital, stable and with wounds that were not life threatening. Not more than thirty minutes later, police were called about another shooting, this time a little west of the university campus, where they found one person shot and in non critical condition.
Analysis: The author’s reason for writing is to inform the audience. This article hits people hard because most of us will go or have been to college. And in college, most people party and drink, which is all super fun until you really think about how quickly that could turn into a dangerous situation. Because when people are drunk, it gives them an extra confidence boost which can cause them to act in ways that they would not act if they were sober. This factor could turn a fight to a shooting, in the blink of an eye. Although it was not announced whether alcohol was a factor in this case or not, it is a proven statistic that alcohol is related to more homicides than all other substances combined. And because alcohol is so prevalent in our society today, this is definitely something to keep in our minds. As far as this shooting being on a college campus, it relates to the shooting to the 2015 shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. In this shooting 9 were killed and another 9 injured by a gunman.
The rise in gun violence specifically in America is a real issue which needs to be dealt with. Whether alcohol was involved or not, it is an alarming thought that at any moment, if someone is in a bad mood, your life could be taken away from you.
