Today on September 24, 2016, Washington D.C greeted the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. The Museum is intended to give a broader explanation of who we are and the story that correlates with US history. The African-American story is not targeted to be separate from that of the larger American story, but instead, it serves the purpose of binding us together. Many influential people crossed the national mall to attend, including George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
ANALYSIS
This museum is super important not only to me but for the rest of America. It is also important to CNN because they assigned three different people to work on the article to make sure that it was correctly portrayed. The museum starts with pre-1860s shackles and continues all the way to Michael Jordan's infamous 1985 Nike high tops. Obama says "We are not a burden of America or a stain on America or an object of shame and pity for America." The museum is intended to unite us all and hopefully give a white visitor some insight on where the pain and anger come from on recent events of police brutality. A black visitor will be pleased at the fact that the younger generation is carrying on the traditions of past. This article was written for all of those who weren't able to attend the event and hear all the significance that this museum holds. Although the museum doesn't exactly synthesize with a past historical occurrence, it does remind us of a historical time. "It reminds us that routine discrimination and Jim Crow aren't ancient history. It's just a blink in the eye of history," Obama said.
