Summary: Listeria is a bacteria that can cause miscarriages as well as sickness and even death in children, the elderly, and anyone with an autoimmune disease or a weakened immune system (however it can be treated with antibiotics). Eggo has once before had a listeria scare in 2009 and had to recall many of their products. In 2010, the FDA criticized their safety standards. Now, they are recalling their whole wheat waffles because they fear that they might be infected with the bacteria. There have not been any reports of the infection so far, but Eggo is asking for anyone with the tainted products to throw them away.
Analysis: This article was posted just three hours ago. However, there have been so many examples of product recalls throughout recent history; Kraft recalled improperly stored cottage cheese, Bluebell recalled infected ice cream, Mars recalled chocolate from 55 different countries, and so many more. It is concerning how frequently we have been seeing this occur in recent years, and it is all due to big corporations and the FDA being very lenient with how they handle food. People do not care about the health and safety of customers as long as they cannot be sued for it. Buying properly handled and cared for goods is very expensive in this day and age, and many people do not have access to it.

I agree that it is very scary to think that the everyday food you consume could be fatal one day due to big industries not really caring about the customer side. Not only is it scary but also quite annoying.
ReplyDeleteIt really changes your perspective when you notice just how much big corporations don't care for their consumers, but how much they care about money. As much as people deny that, money is a huge factor in everything we, and the people we thought we could trust, do.

Food recalls are not the only way in which large food corporations risk the average person's health. The actual ingredients used are often horribly unhealthy (and usually derived from corn, which is difficult to process and an allergen). Corporations really don't care, as long as they're getting as much money out of the situation that they can. But on the topic of the FDA and corn: the only thing specific to corn allergies that I could find on their site was a short entry telling people who believe they may have an allergy to "consult [their] allergen." Not everyone has an allergen. Many people cannot afford a special (or just plain healthy) diet. I clicked on this after replying to two posts about the shootings of innocent people, hoping that this would be a relaxing change, but now I'm angry again, oops. Anyway, what is in our food is important. Corn sucks (sorry, I'm allergic to corn so I kind-of have to hate it passionately).
