Kyla Thomas (1st period) Disney halts sales of Moana costume after racism claims

Summary: This article is about how a depiction of Maui in the form of a kid's Halloween costume,  offended people. Most people thought that it was inappropriate to have someone pretend to be a race that their not. Disney apologized for this and they took the costume out of stock and from websites. This is a lesson about being oblivious to other cultures. We can't just assume that someone wouldn't be offended by making a costume of their culture and making it into something funny. Although I believe that Disney had no intent of causing as much of a ruckus as it did, I believe that they should've gotten the costume approved before letting it hit the stores and the media. They should've known that this kids' costume would be a major headline in the news. It not only applies to this situation but we as people should be conscious about the things that we say or do that may offend other people and that their will be a negative consequence.

Synopsis: Charles Riley is the creator of this article. The author's point of view isn't really mentioned in the article. He took an informational approach instead of telling his side or opinion. This article was produced on September 22, 2016, which shows its relevance to today's news. Prior to the article, I knew of the costume, but I didn't know that people were offended by it. At first, I didn't see this kid's costume as a big deal. It's partially due to the fact that it's not my race that was offended. I had to put myself in the mindset of the people who had a connection to that culture. It made me realize that no one should pretend to be a race that they aren't. The audience for this article are the people who were offended by the costume. This positively affected the audience because they were assured that the costume would be taken out of stock and all websites. This article was written to inform the reader about a situation that seems small but causes a lot of problems. The main point and lesson is that you never know what might offend someone. This article is significant because it applies to all people in a way. People say and do racist things in everyday life. Most of the time, it's simply because they are uneducated about how offensive it could be. In relation to US History, racism has been alive since the colonial and slave era. White Americans have always had many privileges unlike other cultures, legally.

  1. I feel like although Disney was not trying to be offensive, there is already so much cultural appropriation in our society that its good that a company that's goal is to make people happy is doing it's part!
