Fight between off-duty officer and relative leads to shooting inside a Philadelphia home. A man is in critical condition after a fight between an off-duty Philadelphia Police officer and a family member led to a shooting inside a home Monday night, according to officials.
Officials say the ordeal began around 6:30 p.m. inside the unidentified officer's home on the 2700 block of Tauton Street. The officer and a family member began arguing with each other and the argument soon turned physical, according to investigators. Two other people were also inside the home at the time, investigators said.
The off-duty officer was armed with an off-duty weapon during the fight, according to Philadelphia Police Lieutenant John Stanford. The weapon was discharged at least twice, striking one of the individuals inside of the home in the torso area of the body.
No charges have been filed as the investigation continues. This current event is still developing.
Synthesis
Police shootings continue to be a very hot topic in current events. Typically it is reported where a suspect was fleeing, fighting back or resisting arrest. In this event, the shooting took place inside a Philadelphia home between the off-duty officer and a family member. The interesting part of the article is the fact that the off-duty officer was armed and felt the need to fire at least two rounds to end the argument that soon turned physical between himself and a relative.
Analysis
This unfortunate event will just continue to have police officers scrutinized. In this particular situation, it would have been nice to see the off-duty officer use his true training and just beat the crap out of his relative if he was needing to gain control of the situation. However, I just hope this was not a situation where the off-duty officer got into the verbal then physical altercation, just to be able to "throw his weight around" and use his weapon to control the situation. It would further seem that if he had the weapon on him, that he could have handcuffed too. This is event that I will continue to follow as it develops. If it peaks your interest, continue following too and let's discuss more once more information is released.

I find it interesting how that man is identified by his job status. I agree that this incident will cause police officers to be scrutinized further but it's kind of sad that it does. There are many generalizations made in the world based on sexual orientation, race etc. Either way having pre-conceived notions is wrong yet sometimes people forget that generalizing cops is also wrong. It might not be on the same level but nevertheless its a generalization. I'm curious to see if this incident sparks more advocators for pro gun control and armed force control.
