A California school sent home a teen for refusing to dress out of a shirt saing, "Nobody Knows I'm a Lesbian." However, after facing a free speech lawsuit brought by the student, a junior in high school, the district is now changing policy. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Manteca Unified School District must allow students to be able to wear shirts expressing their cultural identities or those of their classmates'.
As we learned from the Espionage and Sedition Acts, they severely restrict freedom of speech and even violate the 1st Amendment. This is a wonderful change because her civil liberties were violated, like the Espionage and Sedition Acts. But, in all honesty, this seemed like a relatively simple case. It was fixed quickly, and there wasn't much trouble over it, which I think points to a more accepting world.
Nice views on individuality. I completely agree!-Emily Eppig
ReplyDeleteNot sure why schools still think it's their job to tell students what they should and shouldn't wear. There are bigger fish to fry.
