Government Experiment on Premature Babies Caused Harm--Becca Brandt 4th

Recently, a federal ethics panel concluded that a government funded and approved experiment on over 1,000 premature babies is harmful. Parents of these babies were given inaccurate information on how risky the program would be. The experiment was to determine if premature babies would die or become blind if their given oxygen levels were targeted to a low or high range. Many of the parents claim that they were not told their babies could die in this experiment. Despite the ethic panel's concerns, the government is not backing down from this experiment.

I do not think human "experimentation" is really okay in the first place, however if the parents of the humans who are being experimented on don't know the risks, that is unacceptable. They have a right to know what is being done to their newborn babies. Also, if there are concerns, the government should not take them lightly. Human lives are at stake. To me, running experiments and clinical trials on humans should not be done unless extreme measures have been taken to assure that it is 100% safe. It is not okay to go around trying new things on humans and having them end up dead.

  1. I completely agree. Human experimentation is not okay, especially when it's preempted with preempted false information.

  2. This is so sad! I agree; I don't think human experimentation is ever a good thing, but if the risks are known, then it might be justifiable. But to lie about the risks and have that result in death is just sick and tragic

  3. I was a preemie born with underdeveloped lungs so I'm pretty sure I would have died if this program had chosen me. This is akin to abortion past the designated trimester.
