Hollywood is an Inclusive Scene, Excluding Minority Groups by Brenna Hale(6th Period)

Hollywood has a knack for excluding groups such as women, minorities, and the LGBT community. "Overall, the landscape of media content is still largely whitewashed," a study from the University of Southern California concluded. This contributes to the #Oscarsowhite craze. This has lead to Oscar head Cheryl Boone pledging to double the number of female and minority nominations. The report by the Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative stated that out of 414 movies and TV series and 11,300 speaking roles, 33% were female, 28% were of a minority ethic group, 2% were LGBT and 74% were male.
This is hard to believe considering the steps and progress the world and especially the U.S. has made in civil rights for minorities. The Black Lives Matter Movement relates to this issue greatly and both touch on an important and sensitive topic. This issue is also related to the Great Migration involving the mass moving of African Americans from the South to the North during World War I, and the exclusion and increase in racism towards blacks for "stealing" the jobs of absent soldiers. There was also prejudice towards women who were called to fill the work force left open by men who were drafted into the army.

  1. I would like to see a movie with just all female minorities and wait for people to ask where the white males went because that's what it feels like to me when there's an all-white male movie.
