This week I read an article that discussed alcohol and how mother's that consume alcohol during pregnancy put their children at risk with several problems. Specifically, these children are put at risk with impairment in kidney blood flow and heightened neurological issues caused by a stroke. This article also provided information behind a study on mice and alcohol's negative role on them in comparison to humans. In the study it was found that male offspring exposed to alcohol before birth showed signs of increased arterial resistance and both male and female mice had greater levels of neurological impairment because of fetal alcohol exposure.
Analysis- I find this article to be very interesting but not surprising! It seems that we are always told about the negative effects of alcohol and the harm that it can do to our bodies. I can relate this article back in U.S. history to the Prohibition movement in the 1920s. During Prohibition, the manufacture, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages was prohibited. Although Prohibition was intended to help U.S. society, it ended up causing more problems, organized crime, corruption and bootlegging. Like this article, alcohol was shown in a negative light during Prohibition, yet people still did what they wanted despite the effects that it had on their body and life.

It is sad that these mothers are harming not only their health but also their baby's health as well. Although I do agree that these effects are not, sadly, very surprising.
ReplyDeleteI don't think a lot of mothers have done enough research or have properly prepared themselves for motherhood and don't know about all of the negative effects of drinking while pregnant. That does not make it right in any way and we should try and educate more women about how to have successful pregnancies/healthy babies.

I'm not surprised that alcohol effects offsprings. But I don't understand that if mothers know that alcohol puts their child at risk, then why do they do it?
