This year the City of Dallas is beginning their mosquito program a month early. They are taking precautions due to the Zika virus. The Dallas City Council Quality of Life and Environmental Committee is planning on giving public education through the radio. They want people to remember the four D's: drain standing water, avoid outdoor activities during dawn/dusk, use mosquito repellent with deet, and dress with long sleeves and pants. The Zika virus has been considered a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization. As of now, there have been no mosquito-borne virus disease case in the United States, but there have been travel-associated cases.
This article relates to the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793. During that year more than 5,000 people were listed for their death between a span of four months in Philadelphia. This epidemic was one of the most severe in United States' history. This year the United States is trying to prevent the past from repeating itself.
This is awesome! I am glad we are taking some precautions in trying to prevent a fatal disease.
