This article is the opinion of a woman who escaped human trafficking and is now an activist against human trafficking around the world. She believes that the recent awareness for human trafficking is amazing, but there is a lot more to be done
I agree with her claim in that, yes, raising awareness is essential, but if no one takes action, then it is pointless. People who's lives are in ruin because of human trafficking need jobs, as the survivor states in the article, and pity is demeaning to those who have experienced such horrific events. One of my very close friends just moved to Cambodia for two years to work in a facility that gives jobs to girls who have been trafficked, and it is people like my friend that inspire me to try to take action with this pressing conflict. This can relate to history when reform movements in the late 1800's. Their were plenty of muckrakers at the time, such as Jacob Riis, who brought awareness to the problems in the tenement community and the Laissez Fair economy. However, reform only occurred when movements were enacted and people started taking action. I believe that raising awareness is crucial to bring out reform, but too many issues today are just talked about and not acted upon.
