Does Leonardo DiCaprio Deserve an Oscar? - Erin O'Day

Leonardo has been nominated several times for an Oscar throughout the years, but has yet to actually win one. This has upset his fan base considerably as they demand that Leo get one. In fact, it has turned into a bit of an internet joke. Well, DiCaprio has been nominated yet again this year for his role in the Revenant, and his fans are crossing their fingers that this is the year. But the author of this article wanted to find out if Leo really deserves an Oscar, so he crunched some numbers. He investigated the rotten tomato ratings of films Leo has been in and compared it to those of other Oscar winners. When the data stacks up, Leo certainly has had an outstanding career, and while he certainly is qualified to be an Oscar winner, it is hard to say that he deserves it. What makes things tough this year is that Matt Damon is also nominated for best actor this year, and by the data and standards developed by the author of this article, Damon is actually more deserving to win an Oscar than DiCaprio.

I was wholeheartedly convinced that Leo deserved a very long overdue Oscar. After all, he is an amazing actor who's been in some amazing films, and he's been nominated so many times only to be let down each time. After hearing this data, I still really hope Leo wins it this year, but I'm less sure he really deserves it.

This can relate to US history because in the 1920s, the concept of a celebrity was relatively new. With the movie industry just getting started, movie stars began to emerge, like Charlie Chaplain and others. I think it's interesting how far the industry has come. Celebrities are such a huge part of our culture, and we have this HUMONGOUS awards show every year that celebrates the careers of these actors.

I cannot believe that Leonardo hasn't won an Oscar considering the amazing roles that he has portrayed. I do feel that if I were to meet him and Matt Damon, the latter would be a more admirable personality.

  2. Leonardo DiCaprio deserves Oscars for many of his roles, but Hugh Glass is NOT one of them! (in my opinion) There was a tough acting job involved, yes, being that his character was literally suffering through the entire movie (except for that one scene where we see him and the Indian catching snowflakes on their tongue). Also, the fact that his character spoke in different languages. Lastly, the fact that Alejandro Inarritu is a total purist as a director and ya know, subjected his actors to thermal torture. (But that sounds like a personal problem to me.) The truth is, Leo won't win- not because the role wasn't tough- but because the role wasn't varied. The only time we as an audience felt happiness for Glass was when he was catching snowflakes on his tongue with his Indian friend. The rest of the time, all we feel is agony and sympathy for him. (which is also why I think The Revenant, sadly, won't get best picture; the entire story was painful, with only one short-lived happy scene)

  3. Of course, I could be wrong, the Oscars can be unpredictable. Another thing, Matt Damon was not that great in The Martian and that movie was too hype. I was surprised that it got nominated for visual effects because I thought it looked like a video game. (I'll stop ranting now.)

  4. (in the first comment, by "varied" role, I meant that the character of Hugh Glass didn't go through effective rises and falls, and he was in pain the entire time)

  5. Leonardo DiCaprio is an amazing actor one role that he played that was truly amazing to me was what's eating Gilbert Grape. Not to mention other great titles like Titanic and Wolf of Wall Street and the list goes on and on. I do hope that he wins this year and I definitely feel like he deserves it.
