Modern Day Monopolies - Ava Cosentino

Summary:
Tom Wainwright, writer, discusses what's going on in the drug cartel industry. Wainwright says that cartels have what is called a "monopsony" which is in other words, a monopoly. He then connects this with being similar to the way large businesses and franchises like Walmart and McDonald's work,

Analysis:
I was drawn to this article all because of the title, "'Narconomics': How The Drug Cartels Operate Like Wal-Mart And McDonald's". As soon as I started to read the article, it stated that the drug cartels are ultimately monopolies. Because Walmart and McDonalds were compared to these monopolies, I then connected this back to what we have learned about with large business and industry monopolies in the U.S's past. It is in fact justifiable to look at these big businesses as modern day monopolies.
