Tulsa county deputy Robert Bates announced he was going to use his taser but then shot Eric Courtney Harris in the back, killing him. Harris had been charged with carrying of illegal weapons. Bates has since been charged with second degree manslaughter involving culpable negligence. It is not quite this simple, however, because 73 year old Bates is only an unpaid reserve deputy. He is only given this power because of his monetary support of the agency, and it is questionable as to why he was allowed to be at this high risk weapons sting. He had no training. Brother of the deceased says that he does not think it was a race thing, but rather something that was purely evil.
I don't know why America's failed judicial and police systems continue to surprise me. This has been happening for years. The Guantanamo Bay torture system is a prime example. Also, the many people in the last decade and current years that have been found innocent only after serving years of undue time in prison. The execution of Ethel Rosenberg, who by all evidence, seemed shakily innocent. Just another example of this would be the many dead because of police brutality, including Micheal Brown and Eric Garner, just to name a few. This is another unfortunate incident. Mistakes are being made, and some kind of new system needs to be put in place.
It's sort of sad, I used to look up to cops as being heroes and protectors, but with more and more of these awful stories that I hear about them, I don't look at them as something positive.
