‘Cruel and Unusual’ Death Penalty Case- Gracie Zytynski
This article written by Nina Totenberg and Domenico Montanaro apart of NPR discusses the ‘cruel and unusual’ death penalty case. The Supreme Court has decided that a man, who is a death row inmate, is not entitled to an alternate method of execution because of his rare medical condition. The Supreme Court says this because the one the state uses could cause him several minutes of great pain a suffering. Bucklew, the man on death row, said that because of his medical condition, using lethal injection could cause him “cruel and unusual” punishment, so he argues to use nitrogen gas. Overall, this connects to the Eighth Amendment that states that there should not be cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
