128 years later, New Orleans is apologizing for lynching 11 Italians- Nik Puri

An event that took place 128 years ago is finally being apologized for. 128 years ago, the largest mass lynching in US history took place in New Orleans and killed 11 Italians. New Orleans Mayor, LaToya Cantrell is expected to issue an apology in a ceremony on the Morning of April 12 at the city's American Italian Cultural Center. In the 1890s, Italians were common victims of nativist hostility, and unfortunately, more than 20 were lynched throughout the decade. Apparently Theodore Roosevelt brought out a discussion at a dinner party he was attending and claimed he thought the lynchings "were rather a good thing."

Before I read this article, I never knew that Italians were huge victims of lynchings. This relates to U.S history because it talks about how Nativists changed the image of America during that time. This article was targeted towards the American population with the purpose of informing them about the apology. Finally, this article is important because it's an example of recognizing mistakes and taking responsibility for them.
