Last month, a research vehicle by the name of R/V petrol uncovered the remain of the U.S. Hornet, a ww2 era aircraft carrier that sank off of the boat if the Solomon islands. It was found at a depth of 17,000 feet underneath the South Pacific. The ship was announced found last Tuesday by Vulcan, Inc. which is headed by Paul Allan, one of the co-founders of Microsoft. The ship had taken part in the Doolittle raid against Tokyo in 1941, as well as the battles at Guadalcanal and Midway. It was sunk by Japanese dive bombers at the battle of the Santa Cruz islands, ending its service
The company has no plans of recovering the wreckage as it is the resting ground for over 140 men who died on board when it sunk.
I agree with the company's move not to recover the wreckage, as it would be disrespectful to the men who served onboard the ship. I think its important to remember those who have fought for us in the past, to preserve our freedoms, and when we hear stories like this, it helps to remind us of the rich history of sacrifice and bravery that has led to our country's prosperity and freedoms.
