White House Defends Emergency Declaration-Paige McManaman

Trump's National Emergency Declaration
On Feb 15, President Trump declared a state of emergency at the southern border of the US in response to the claimed illegal immigration from Mexico, which Trump has been quoted as saying several times is "an invasion of drugs and criminals". Despite several sources and other parties saying that the illegal immigration at the US-Mexico border is quite low, Trump's declaration came as a way to provide him access to the needed funds to build his wall on the border. Many critics of Trump have stated his declaration to be unconstitutional. Democrats and some republicans have declared his actions to be in violation of the constitution. While Trump's reaction to many people going against his policy is that there are "not too many people", the likelihood of legal battle over such funding, after the longest gov shutdown and a failure to fund the wall before seems to be very likely. While Trump has the support of key white house personnel, it is possible for the Congress and senate to block Trump's declaration, but he can also veto, if this continues and legal action is taken it is also entirely possible for the supreme court to get involved and present an official ruling. Until then, Trump's presidential powers in a state of emergency are available to him.
Trump’s actions echoes the past actions of former president Andrew Jackson. While he didn't declare national emergencies, Jackson did declare acts which expanded his presidential power such as the Force Bill, which gave him direct access to military control, however his reasons were in defense of congress against the possible secession of South Carolina. While Trump doesn't exactly express good interests toward the Mexican people, his actions are publicly motivated to the betterment of the US people, much like Jackson in some cases.
