On February 4, an 11-year old from Florida was arrested because of a dispute over the Pledge of Allegiance. The Florida school district said that the student was arrested for being disruptive, not for refusing to say the pledge. The substitute teacher in charge of the class wasn't aware that the student code of conduct doesn't mandate students participation. "We do not condone the substitute's behavior," the district said in a statement Monday. "We respect our students' right to freedom of expression and we are committed to protecting that critical right while ensuring peaceful classrooms so all students can learn." This article relates to US history because it talks about a violation of the first amendment and over-policing blacks at school.
