Child Arrested For Saying Pedge Of Allegiance

A Florida student who refused to stand for the pledge at school was arrested for causing a disturbance. A substitute teacher attempted to force the student and when asked why he wouldn’t stand he responded that the flag was racist and then explained why the national anthem was offensive to black people. The 6th grader was then asked to leave the classroom and refused and was then arrested for causing a disturbance.

Though the administration claims they didn’t arrest him for refusing to say the pledge, none of this conflict would have happened if the substitute teacher didn’t infringe on the student’s rights. It’s unfair to expect a person to not stand up for their rights. It really made me angry because I was always the odd one out in middle school when I didn’t stand for the pledge and I remember teachers trying to force me to stand all the time. That child could have been me. I am fortunately blessed to go to a school that allows students to express their right to stand or not stand. This reminds me a lot of countless non violent protests during the civil rights movement where black people were seen as being a “disturbance” for standing up for their rights though they aren’t bothering anyone.
