On February 4th, a sixth grade student is facing a misdemeanor charge over refusal to recite the pledge of allegiance at a Lakeland Florida school. The incident started as the student told the teacher the flag and the allegiance were "racist". Then there appeared to be a "boisterous" exchange between the teacher and the young man. This exchange was so elevated the police were called in to mediate. According to the police department, the student was charged with disruption of school and resisting a police officer without violence. This issue has been a source of tension since SF quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee before a football game refusing to respect the flag. This national debate has never been resolved. The young student certainly has the first amendment in his favor. However, disruption of school and disrespect of our law officers should be taken into account in the situation. It is a shame both sides cannot sit down and discuss their intent.

This article was interesting and surprising that this would happen. I wish the teacher and student could have resolved their differences before this escalated to an arrest.
