Mekinna Knight - Why Racial Slurs?
In recent news, there was a conflict at a high school north of San Diego that leaves adults and authority floored. About 10 students , attending Southern California High School, take it upon themselves at their senior picnic to spell out the N-word on t-shirts standing next to each other, take a picture, and post it on social media. The district concludes that the students "made a poor decision" expressing a racial slur, which is not tolerated by the school, and will be facing the rightful consequences. The school stresses the importance of expressing diversity and acceptance in their learning environment. The principal, Adriana Lepe-Ramirez was astounded to witness such stupidness, and declares that they will not tolerate these actions or any racial or bullying actions alike. Lepe-Ramirez also states that each and every student should think long and hard about how their words can, and will, affect others. A former student, Cade Pannell, found the post extremely offensive and discussed that even if they thought it was a joke, it wasn't.

This article can be contrasted with the history of the Little Rock Nine. This was a group of teenagers who after the supreme court outlawed segregation, braved the violent protests to attend school- although this did not mark the end of racial segregation in America.

This really doesn't surprise me at all. I've been called the n-word several times, and heard it thrown around by white people who think it's funny all the time. I just hope the kids are given a good punishment for what they did.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad how our generation sees this as funny. People need to become more aware and educated on what their actions are doing to others and not just themselves.
ReplyDeletethey really should have thought this over and how it affects the people around them. We need to look at the deeper meanung of the words used and how it is not okay at all. I'm glad these kids are facing the concequences for their actions so they wont do it again.
